Cake Pop Madness

So if you have heard of Pintrest, you would know that it can be addictive. Not only addictive, but somehow gets ideas to creep into your mind and makes you believe that you are capable of re-creating anything that your eyes land on while you slowly scroll down the page (right click, save image). Or so I thought when I first discovered “Cake Pops” on Pintrest.

For those of you who don’t yet know, Cake Pops are the latest thing to hit the entertaining scene. We have evolved from traditional cakes, to cute cup cakes and now cake pops. A cake pop is exactly what it sounds like. A cake ball, on a Popsicle stick. What they don’t tell you, is how messy the process can be! You fall in love with the images and mentally plan how you will make yours look. The instructions seem pretty simple. Bake cake, mould balls and dunk in chocolate! Boom! You have a cake pop.

So we bought some ingredients and Lauretta came over while the boys were at poker on evening. The room filled up with the smell of chocolate cake and we got our hands dirty rolling the mixture into the shape of balls. Then I made a boo-boo. The chocolate coating wasn’t melting at a quick enough rate for my liking, so I had the bright idea of adding just a dash of cream to speed up the process. Lauretta warned me that by doing this, the chocolate will not set properly around the cake balls. I chose to protest this and continued to add the cream. The consistence of the melted chocolate was perfect and the dunking began. We left them to chill in the fridge for a while, and after twenty minutes, and dreading that I would have to admit that Lauretta was right after all, the pops were not quite right but looked good anyway.

We took the first batch to the office and talked everyone in to trying them out. The taste was there, but the concept wasn’t. Instead of a nice crunch chocolate coating with a light crumpling cake centre, out balls were gooey and chewy.

Second Attempt:

Our bosses daughter’s birthday was coming up and I explained to her what a cake pop was and if she would like us to make some for her daughter to take to school for her birthday. This was the perfect opportunity for me to take Lauretta’s advice in the second attempt.
Here are some images of the second attempt.
